University of Washington vs King's College London for pre-med: which is the better choice?

For a student who wants the clearest and most supported path to applying to medical school in the United States, the University of Washington is usually the more practical choice. It is built around the U.S. pre-med model, so you can complete the standard prerequisite courses, find clinical and research experiences in a familiar system, and use a pre-health advising structure designed for U.S. med school applications. King’s College London is an excellent university, but it is not set up around the American pre-med pipeline in the same direct way.

UW makes the most sense for someone who wants flexibility while staying on a med school track. You do not have to major in biology, but you can still take the core science sequence, prepare for the MCAT, and pursue volunteering, shadowing, or hospital-based work in Seattle. UW also benefits from being connected to a major academic medical environment, which can help with research exposure and healthcare experience that U.S. medical schools recognize easily.

King’s is more appealing for a student who is specifically excited by studying in London and is comfortable navigating a less standard route for U.S. med school applications. You would need to be very careful about course equivalencies, lab requirements, recommendation expectations, and whether U.S. medical schools will accept all of your prerequisite coursework from a U.K. institution without additional U.S. coursework. That does not make the path impossible, but it can make it more complicated.

If there is any chance you may want to attend medical school in the U.K., then King’s becomes more interesting, but that is really a different system and should be evaluated on its own terms.
