Is University of Washington or Rutgers better for computer science?

University of Washington has the edge for computer science. Its Paul G. Allen School is one of the most established and visible CS programs in the country, and Seattle gives undergrads unusually direct access to a dense tech market with major employers nearby. For internships, research, and recruiter attention specifically in CS, UW is the tougher school to beat.

The biggest differentiator is location and employer access. Being in Seattle matters a lot for software recruiting because companies like Amazon and Microsoft have a huge local presence, and many other tech firms actively recruit there as well. That proximity tends to make networking, part-time work during the school year, company events, and quick interview pipelines more available than they are at Rutgers.

Research is another place where UW stands out. The Allen School has a very strong reputation across areas like AI, systems, HCI, and data, and undergrads benefit from being in a department with deep faculty activity and strong industry ties. Rutgers absolutely has legitimate CS research and solid faculty, but UW is more likely to feel like a national CS hub where high-level work is happening at scale.

Rutgers is still a very good option, especially if cost is much better or you want access to the New York and New Jersey job market. Its location helps with internships, and the CS program is respected enough to place students well. But if the question is purely which school offers the stronger overall undergraduate CS environment and more concentrated recruiting opportunities, UW comes out ahead.
