Is Rice or Columbia better for city life?

I’m trying to figure out which school would feel better if I want to be in an urban environment, but still have a campus experience. I know Rice is in Houston and Columbia is in New York, so I’m mostly wondering which one actually feels more connected to the city in everyday life.

I’m a high school senior and city vibe is one of the biggest factors in my decision.

Columbia is the better choice for city life. In everyday student life, it feels much more woven into the surrounding city because you are in Manhattan, use the subway constantly, and can step off campus into a dense neighborhood with restaurants, internships, events, and everyday city traffic all around you. Rice is in Houston and near major city resources, but its campus feels more separate and self-contained.

One big difference is how the campuses interact with their surroundings. Columbia has a traditional enclosed campus in Morningside Heights, so you still get a real campus center, but the city presses right up against it. Students often move back and forth between campus and the rest of New York as part of a normal day, not just on weekends or for special outings.

Rice has a beautiful residential campus with a strong internal community, and that is a major part of its appeal. Even though it sits close to the Museum District, the Texas Medical Center, and other parts of Houston, the daily rhythm is more campus-based. Houston is also much more car-dependent than New York, which changes how connected to the city you feel hour to hour.

If your priority is an urban environment that is constantly present in daily life while still having a recognizable campus, Columbia matches that more clearly. Rice gives you access to a major city, but Columbia gives you the stronger everyday city immersion.
