USC or UC Berkeley for investment banking: which is better for recruiting and alumni network?

I’m trying to decide between USC and UC Berkeley and I’m interested in investment banking after college. Both schools seem strong, but I keep hearing different things about recruiting access, alumni connections, and how much each name helps on Wall Street.

I want to understand which school generally has the stronger pipeline into investment banking for an undergrad.

For undergraduate investment banking, UC Berkeley usually has the stronger overall pipeline, especially if you are aiming for top New York or San Francisco recruiting. USC is still very credible for banking, though, and its alumni network can feel more accessible and loyal, particularly in Los Angeles.

Berkeley tends to fit the student who wants the broadest reach and is comfortable competing in a very large, high-achieving environment. It places well into investment banking through Haas, economics, and other majors, and employers are very familiar with Berkeley talent.

USC makes a lot of sense for the student who values relationship-driven recruiting and wants a campus culture that can feel more personal. The Trojan alumni network is real, especially in Southern California, and that can matter in finance because referrals and warm introductions help. If you are proactive, polished, and good at networking, USC can convert that strength into strong banking outcomes, particularly in LA offices and West Coast roles.

A practical distinction is that Berkeley may offer more sheer volume of high-level finance peers, clubs, and bank recognition, but it can also feel more sink-or-swim. USC may offer slightly less automatic Wall Street prestige, yet sometimes gives students an easier social runway for building mentorship and alumni support. In banking recruiting, that tradeoff matters.

If your question is strictly which school gives the stronger undergrad investment banking pipeline, Berkeley gets the nod. If you think you will thrive more in a network-heavy, alumni-responsive environment and may prefer LA recruiting, USC is a very defensible choice.
