Ohio State vs Notre Dame for value: which is the better college investment?

I'm trying to compare these two schools mainly from a value standpoint, not just prestige. I care about the balance between tuition cost, financial aid, and how strong the degree is after graduation.

Both seem like great schools, but I want to know which one tends to give students a better return on investment overall.

The biggest practical tradeoff is cost structure versus brand strength: Ohio State is often the more economical option, especially for Ohio residents and students who do not receive major private-school aid, while Notre Dame can justify its higher price for some students because it has a very strong national alumni network and a reputation that travels widely across industries. From a pure value lens, the answer usually depends on your net price, not the sticker price, because Notre Dame is known for need-based aid and Ohio State can vary a lot by residency and merit.

Ohio State tends to win on straightforward affordability. In-state tuition is much lower than Notre Dame’s full cost, and even for out-of-state students, the total bill can still come in below Notre Dame unless Notre Dame gives strong aid. Ohio State also has the scale and breadth of a flagship public university, which can be a real value advantage for students who want many majors, research options, honors opportunities, and a large employer base without paying private-school prices.

Notre Dame tends to win on outcomes per student rather than raw cost. It has a very strong undergraduate focus, a tightly connected alumni network, and excellent placement in fields like finance, consulting, engineering, and preprofessional paths. For students with significant financial need, Notre Dame can sometimes become surprisingly competitive on price, and in those cases its combination of aid and post-grad outcomes can make the investment look very good.

If you are paying close to full price at both schools, Ohio State is usually the better value. If Notre Dame gives you a much better aid package, or if you want the kind of smaller, highly networked undergraduate experience that can matter in certain career paths, Notre Dame can absolutely be worth the premium. The deciding factor should be the actual net cost each school gives you, because that is where this comparison usually swings.
