Ohio State vs Miami University for engineering: which is the better choice overall?

The biggest practical tradeoff is scale versus intimacy. Ohio State gives you a much larger, more established engineering ecosystem with more majors, more research, more recruiting, and a broader alumni network, while Miami offers a smaller campus feel and typically more direct access to professors earlier on. For engineering specifically, that difference matters a lot because internships, specialized coursework, project teams, and employer visibility tend to expand with program size.

Ohio State has the clearer edge for engineering overall. Its College of Engineering is much larger and deeper across disciplines, with stronger breadth in areas like mechanical, electrical, civil, computer, biomedical, and materials-related paths, plus more lab infrastructure and student design teams. A big public flagship like OSU also tends to draw a wider range of engineering employers to campus, which can make internship and job searching more convenient.

Miami is a respected university and can be a very good place for a student who learns best in smaller classes and wants a more personal undergraduate environment. But in engineering, it simply does not have the same scale, specialization, or industry footprint as Ohio State. If you are still exploring which branch of engineering you want, OSU also gives you more room to pivot without running into as many program limitations.

Ohio State’s engineering brand is stronger with employers across Ohio and well beyond it, and that can help when you are applying for internships, co-ops, research roles, and first jobs. Unless Miami is significantly cheaper for you or you know you would thrive much better in a smaller, quieter environment, Ohio State is the better overall choice for engineering.
