Is UChicago or Boston University more fun for undergraduates?

Boston University is usually the more visibly lively and socially active undergraduate experience, while UChicago tends to feel more intense, quirky, and centered around smaller circles. BU sits right in Boston with easy access to restaurants, concerts, sports, and internships, so a lot of student life happens both on campus and out in the city. UChicago has social life too, but its culture is more known for intellectual energy, house traditions, themed events, and friend groups built around shared interests rather than a big extroverted campus buzz.

BU often fits students who want a faster-paced environment and a broader definition of “fun.” Because it is integrated into the city, going out can mean exploring neighborhoods, seeing live music, grabbing late-night food, or taking advantage of Boston’s student-heavy atmosphere. The student body can feel ambitious and pre-professional, but usually in a socially outgoing way, with plenty happening outside the classroom.

UChicago makes more sense for someone who finds fun in oddball traditions, deep conversations, and a campus culture that leans self-aware and academically serious. Its students often describe the social scene as real but less performative, with parties and events existing alongside a stronger norm of spending time in discussion, student orgs, or house-based communities. The campus itself is beautiful and more self-contained than BU’s, which can create a tighter community, but it does not usually project the same constant external energy as being in central Boston.

So if by “fun” you mean busy, social, and city-driven, BU is more likely to feel lively in the way you are imagining. If you like a more distinctive, eccentric environment where the social life is there but wrapped into a very intellectual campus personality, UChicago can be fun in a different way.
