Northwestern vs Michigan for city life: which campus feels more urban?

Northwestern will usually feel more connected to a real city in day-to-day student life. Its campus is in Evanston, which is a walkable, built-up suburb on Lake Michigan, and Chicago is directly accessible by CTA and Metra, so getting into the city is routine rather than a special trip. Michigan is in Ann Arbor, which is lively, dense, and full of restaurants, shops, and students, but it is still much more of a classic college town than an urban campus environment.

Northwestern fits a student who wants campus plus easy city access. You can spend most of your week in a residential campus setting, then get into Chicago for internships, concerts, neighborhoods, museums, food, or just wandering around without needing a car. Evanston itself also has enough going on that daily life does not feel isolated.

Michigan fits someone who wants energy and walkability, but centered around the university rather than a major city. Ann Arbor has a real downtown right next to campus, and that makes everyday life active and convenient, but the atmosphere is still dominated by the college-town bubble. Detroit exists as a nearby city, but it is not woven into student life the way Chicago is for many Northwestern students.

If your standard for city life is having a major city feel close at hand and realistically part of your routine, Northwestern has the edge. If what you really want is constant activity, a strong downtown, and a campus embedded in a fun college town, Michigan can still satisfy that, just in a less urban way.
