Virginia Tech or University of Maryland for finance?
I’m trying to decide between Virginia Tech and the University of Maryland for finance and want to understand which one is generally stronger for this major.
I’m a high school senior looking at both schools seriously, and I want to compare them based on finance specifically, not just overall reputation.

University of Maryland has the edge for finance. Its Smith School of Business is more established and visible in finance recruiting, and being close to Washington, D.C., gives students easier access to internships during the school year in banking, asset management, consulting, and government-related finance. For finance specifically, Maryland is usually the school with the stronger brand.
One concrete difference is the business school structure. At Maryland, finance sits inside the Robert H. Smith School of Business, which is one of the university’s most recognized academic units and has a long track record in business recruiting and alumni connections. That matters because finance outcomes often depend heavily on employer pipelines, student clubs, and alumni who actively pull students into internships and first jobs.
Location is another real advantage. College Park makes it much easier to tap into D.C.-area opportunities while enrolled, not just in the summer. That includes corporate finance roles, policy-related financial work, and internships with firms and agencies that value students who can commute or network in person. Virginia Tech has strong employer respect overall, but Blacksburg is much less convenient for that kind of regular access.
Virginia Tech is still a solid option, especially if you like its campus culture or if cost comes out meaningfully lower. Its business school can absolutely place students into good finance roles, and motivated students can do well there. But when the question is which school is stronger specifically for finance, Maryland is the more compelling pick because of its business-school reputation, recruiting network, and location-driven internship access.
