Which is better value: University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign or UC Berkeley?

I’m trying to figure out which school gives the better return for the money overall. I know both are strong public universities, but I’m mostly comparing cost, reputation, and how much the degree seems to pay off later.

I’m applying as a high school senior and want to make a smart decision without just chasing prestige.

The biggest practical tradeoff is price versus marginal prestige. UIUC is often meaningfully less expensive, especially for Illinois residents and in many cases for out-of-state students too, while UC Berkeley carries broader name recognition and a slightly stronger national and international brand in several fields. Both are top-tier public universities with excellent recruiting, large alumni networks, and strong outcomes, so the value difference usually comes down more to net cost and major than to a dramatic gap in opportunity.

For engineering, computer science, business-adjacent paths, and other technical fields, UIUC is one of the best values in the country when the price is lower. Employers know it well, and in fields like engineering and CS, its reputation is elite enough that paying a large premium for Berkeley often does not produce a proportionally larger payoff. Berkeley still has exceptional pull, especially in tech, research, startups, and graduate school placement, but UIUC is hardly a step down in those areas.

Outside the most technical majors, Berkeley’s brand tends to travel a bit more broadly. It can carry extra weight in policy, economics, some humanities and social sciences, and in international recognition. But that advantage matters most when the cost difference is modest. If Berkeley would require substantially more debt, the return becomes much harder to justify because both schools can get you to very strong outcomes.

The cost-of-living piece matters too. Berkeley-area housing and daily expenses are high, and that can make the real price gap wider than tuition alone suggests. UIUC is usually easier on a student budget.
