University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign vs. Carnegie Mellon for robotics: which is better for an undergraduate student?

I’m a high school junior trying to narrow down my college list, and both UIUC and Carnegie Mellon keep coming up when I think about robotics. I know they’re both strong schools, but I’m trying to understand which one is generally considered the better choice for an undergraduate student who wants to study robotics and build hands-on experience.

I’m mostly looking for a broad comparison of the two programs and the kinds of opportunities each school tends to offer in robotics.

Carnegie Mellon has the edge for undergraduate robotics. CMU is one of the few places where robotics is a central institutional strength rather than just a specialty inside another department, and undergrads benefit from that depth through the School of Computer Science, the College of Engineering, and the Robotics Institute. If your goal is to be surrounded by robotics-focused faculty, labs, and peers from the start, CMU usually offers the denser ecosystem.

The biggest differentiator is how visible and established robotics is on campus. CMU’s Robotics Institute is a major hub in the field, and that matters because it creates more research groups, more seminars, more project teams, and more day-to-day exposure to robotics across areas like perception, autonomy, manipulation, and human-robot interaction. At UIUC, robotics is strong, but it is spread more across departments such as mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, and computer science rather than defining the university in the same way.

For hands-on undergraduate opportunities, CMU tends to make it easier to plug into robotics work early because there are so many adjacent labs and student teams focused on autonomous systems, AI, and hardware. Undergraduate students often benefit from being in a place where robotics is not a niche interest. UIUC absolutely offers strong project-based engineering experiences too, and it has an excellent reputation in CS and engineering, but the robotics community is usually less concentrated.

Another difference is the surrounding academic culture. At CMU, robotics sits right next to elite strengths in machine learning, computer vision, software, and human-computer interaction, which is especially useful if you are interested in modern robotics rather than only the mechanical side. UIUC is outstanding for a student who wants a broad, flexible engineering education with many paths into robotics, but CMU is the school more people would point to first for undergraduate robotics specifically.

Cost and overall fit still matter a lot, because UIUC can be the more practical option depending on residency and finances.
