University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign vs UCLA for electrical engineering: which is better?

UIUC has the edge for electrical engineering. Its ECE department is one of the school’s signature strengths, it has especially deep breadth across core EE areas like semiconductors, communications, controls, signal processing, and computing-adjacent hardware, and employers in engineering tend to know UIUC exceptionally well for this field.

One big differentiator is departmental scale and identity. At UIUC, electrical and computer engineering is a flagship academic unit with a very large research footprint, extensive technical course offerings, and a campus culture where engineering is central to the university’s reputation. That usually translates into more EE-specific labs, more specialized electives, and more faculty doing work across nearly every major subfield.

Another difference is recruiting and industry perception. Both schools are well respected, but UIUC has an unusually strong national reputation specifically in engineering, not just overall as a university. For students targeting hardware, chips, embedded systems, power, or traditional EE-heavy roles, that name carries a lot of weight with engineering employers and graduate programs.

UCLA is still excellent, especially if you value being in Los Angeles, access to Southern California tech and defense companies, and a broader campus environment that is less dominated by engineering. It is a very strong choice, but for the question of pure electrical engineering strength and reputation, UIUC is the clearer answer.

A practical note is that the gap is not so large that cost should be ignored. If UCLA is much cheaper for you, that could easily outweigh a modest academic edge. But on the EE program itself, UIUC is the one more closely associated with top-tier electrical engineering.
