Is USC or Cornell better for hotel management?

The biggest practical tradeoff is specialized hospitality training versus a broader business-oriented path with hospitality access through location and industry ties. Cornell has one of the most established hotel management programs in the country through the Nolan School of Hotel Administration, with a curriculum built specifically around hospitality, real estate, service operations, and hotel finance. USC is excellent overall and has strong connections in Los Angeles, but it does not offer the same dedicated, industry-defining undergraduate hotel program that Cornell does.

For hospitality education itself, Cornell is the clearer choice. Its program is designed for students who want to work directly in hotels, resorts, hospitality investment, food and beverage, and related areas. The coursework, alumni network, and recruiting pipeline are much more targeted to hotel management than what USC offers.

USC can still work well if you want a more flexible route, especially if your interests overlap with business, real estate, entrepreneurship, or entertainment and luxury brands in Southern California. Being in Los Angeles can be a real advantage for internships during the academic year, and USC’s overall network is powerful. But that is different from having a hospitality school that is itself a major feeder into the hotel industry.

In career preparation specifically for hotel management, Cornell has the edge because employers in hospitality know exactly what that program is and regularly recruit from it. If your goal is to build a career inside the hotel industry rather than adjacent to it, Cornell is the stronger option here.
