Is UMass Amherst or Northeastern better for finance students?

I’m trying to decide between UMass Amherst and Northeastern and I want to study finance. I know both schools have business programs, but I’m not sure which one would give me the stronger overall finance experience.

I’m mostly thinking about things like recruiting, internships, and how well the school’s name helps for finance jobs after college.

The biggest practical tradeoff is this: Northeastern offers a more built-in path to internships through co-op and its Boston location, while UMass Amherst can give you a strong finance education at a lower cost but usually with less automatic access to finance employers. For recruiting and early work experience, Northeastern has a real edge because students can spend substantial time in full-time co-op roles and stay close to firms during the school year. UMass Amherst’s Isenberg School is well respected, especially in the Northeast, but students often need to be more proactive about networking and travel for certain opportunities.

For finance specifically, Northeastern tends to be stronger if your priority is getting multiple resume-building experiences before graduation. Boston matters here. You are closer to asset management firms, banks, consulting-adjacent roles, and corporate finance offices, and the co-op structure can make it easier to turn school-year connections into real experience. That can be especially helpful if you are still figuring out whether you want investment-related roles, corporate finance, FP&A, or something more business-analytics oriented.

UMass Amherst is not weak at all. Isenberg has a solid reputation, a large alumni base, and strong outcomes for students who actively use the school’s resources. For finance jobs in corporate settings, regional banks, and broader business roles, it can absolutely get you where you want to go. The difference is that the path may feel less built around internship timing and urban employer access than it does at Northeastern.

On name recognition, Northeastern currently carries more momentum with employers in major Northeast cities, especially because so many recruiters are familiar with its co-op model. UMass Amherst has very good recognition too, but more as a strong public flagship and through Isenberg specifically rather than as a school that finance employers are constantly engaging during the academic year.

If UMass Amherst is meaningfully cheaper, that changes the calculation a lot, because Isenberg is strong enough that graduating with less debt can easily outweigh Northeastern’s networking advantage.
