Is UMass Amherst or Michigan State considered more prestigious?

The biggest practical tradeoff is that Michigan State tends to carry a broader national name and Big Ten visibility, while UMass Amherst has a strong reputation but is more often viewed through a regional Northeast lens. In everyday broad-reputation terms, Michigan State is usually seen as the more prestigious name overall.

UMass Amherst is still a respected flagship public university, and in some circles it may be taken just as seriously or even more seriously for particular strengths. But when people who are not focused on a specific major hear the two names, Michigan State is more likely to register immediately as a nationally prominent university.

That said, “prestige” here is fairly soft and not the kind of difference that usually changes outcomes by itself.
