UMass Amherst vs Rutgers for finance careers: which is better for recruiting and alumni network?
I’m trying to decide between UMass Amherst and Rutgers and want to go into finance after college. Both seem solid, but I’m not sure which one has the stronger recruiting pipeline, alumni connections, and overall reputation for landing first jobs in finance.
I’m mainly thinking about long-term career opportunities, not just campus life, and I want to choose the school that gives me the best shot at breaking into the industry.

Rutgers has the edge for finance careers, mainly because of location and employer access. Being in New Jersey puts you much closer to New York City, and that matters for internships during the school year, alumni events, and firms that recruit students they can meet repeatedly.
The biggest differentiator is proximity to NYC. At Rutgers, it is much more realistic to commute for part-time internships, coffee chats, and networking events while still in school, which can turn into full-time offers. For finance, that kind of access often matters more than broad school prestige because early experience and relationships drive recruiting.
UMass Amherst is still a credible option and can absolutely place students into finance roles, especially if you are proactive. The Isenberg School of Management is well respected, and students do land in Boston and some New York roles. But for first-job recruiting specifically, Boston is a smaller finance market than the NYC area, and UMass usually requires more deliberate effort to build the same density of connections that Rutgers students can access more naturally.
For long-term career opportunities, the difference is not that one school shuts doors and the other opens all of them. It is that Rutgers tends to make the early steps into finance more accessible through geography, employer visibility, and alumni concentration, which can compound over time.
