MIT vs Boston University for computer science: which is better for undergrad?

I’m trying to compare these two schools mainly for an undergraduate computer science degree. Both are in Boston, but I’m not sure how different they are in terms of CS strength, opportunities, and overall student experience.

I’m looking for a general comparison that would help me understand which school is usually considered the better fit for a student who wants to study computer science.

For undergraduate computer science, MIT is the more intense, theory-driven option, while Boston University makes more sense for a student who wants strong CS training in a broader university setting with a somewhat less all-consuming academic culture. MIT’s EECS ecosystem is one of the central pillars of the school, and its undergraduate research culture, startup pipeline, and math-heavy approach are deeply woven into campus life. BU can be a good place for a student who wants flexibility, urban internship access, and strong academics without quite the same pressure-cooker feel.

On outcomes and reputation in CS specifically, MIT carries more weight and tends to open more doors automatically, especially for top-tier research, elite tech recruiting, and highly technical peer networks. BU students can absolutely do well in software engineering and related fields, but they may need to be a bit more self-directed in seeking out the highest-end opportunities.

So in a head-to-head comparison for CS alone, MIT is usually viewed as the more powerful undergraduate option. BU becomes more compelling when the student wants a strong CS degree without committing to the very specialized, highly intense MIT environment.
