MIT vs. Williams for science: which is better for undergraduate research and STEM learning?

I’m trying to decide between MIT and Williams and I’m mainly interested in science. Both seem strong, but I’m not sure how they compare for actual undergraduate research, lab access, and how much support students get in STEM.

I’m less focused on prestige and more on where I’d get the best science experience as an undergrad.

The biggest practical tradeoff is research scale versus faculty access. MIT gives you a much larger science and engineering ecosystem, with more labs, more specialized equipment, and many more ongoing projects, while Williams offers much smaller classes, closer professor relationships, and a very intentional undergraduate-only learning environment. For pure breadth of STEM opportunities, MIT is hard to match; for day-to-day mentoring and classroom attention, Williams is unusually strong.

At MIT, undergraduates are deeply built into the research culture. The UROP program is a real advantage because it makes research a normal part of undergraduate life rather than something only a few students do late in college. If you want exposure to advanced subfields, interdisciplinary labs, graduate-level infrastructure, and a campus where science is the center of gravity, MIT has the clearer edge.

Williams is excellent in science, but in a different way. Because it is a liberal arts college with no graduate students, undergrads are the ones working most directly with faculty, and that can mean very hands-on lab access and strong mentorship earlier on. Intro and intermediate STEM classes are typically more personal, and professors often know students well enough to guide them closely toward summer research, honors work, and recommendations.

For actual undergraduate research, MIT usually wins on volume and variety. You are more likely to find a lab that matches a very specific interest, especially in cutting-edge or niche areas. Williams can still be outstanding, especially if you learn best through close collaboration and want to avoid competing with grad students for attention, but its research menu is naturally smaller.

For STEM learning, the answer depends more on how you thrive. MIT is intense, fast-moving, and surrounded by peers who are very science-focused, which can be energizing but demanding. Williams tends to offer a more discussion-friendly, professor-centered academic experience, which many students find better for building confidence and depth.

If your top priority is the strongest overall undergraduate science ecosystem, especially for research breadth and immersion in STEM culture, I’d lean MIT. If your top priority is personalized teaching and close faculty mentorship in science, Williams is a serious contender, but MIT offers the more expansive undergraduate science experience.
