Wake Forest vs Virginia Tech for engineering: which is the better choice for an undergraduate engineering degree?

For undergraduate engineering, Virginia Tech is the much stronger choice. It has a large, established College of Engineering with many traditional disciplines, extensive lab and project resources, and a long-standing reputation among engineering employers and graduate programs. Wake Forest’s engineering offering is much smaller and newer, so it can be appealing for a certain kind of student, but it does not have the same depth, scale, or visibility in engineering.

Virginia Tech fits students who want a full engineering environment from day one. If you are still weighing different branches of engineering, Tech gives you far more room to explore fields like mechanical, civil, electrical, computer, aerospace, and more within one well-developed system. You also get the benefit of a campus culture where engineering is a major academic center of gravity, which usually means more specialized electives, more design teams, more research labs, and a broader recruiting pipeline.

Wake Forest makes more sense for a student who wants engineering in a smaller, more intimate liberal arts setting and is drawn to an interdisciplinary approach. Its program can be attractive if you like close faculty contact, smaller classes, and a curriculum that blends engineering with broader problem-solving across disciplines. But that same small scale means fewer engineering pathways, fewer upper-level options, and less of the classic engineering-school ecosystem that many students want.

On reputation specifically, Virginia Tech carries much more weight in engineering circles. Employers, internship programs, and graduate schools are far more likely to immediately recognize it as a major engineering institution. That does not mean a motivated Wake student cannot do well, but if the main question is which school is stronger for undergraduate engineering education, Virginia Tech has the clearer advantage.

Unless you have a strong personal reason to prefer Wake Forest’s size and style, Virginia Tech is the more robust place to study engineering.
