Boston College vs Penn State for finance: which is better for career placement and recruiting?

I’m trying to decide between Boston College and Penn State and want to study finance. Both seem like solid schools, but I’m mostly thinking about which one gives better opportunities for internships, recruiting, and getting into finance jobs after graduation.

I’m not looking at fit or campus life as much right now, just which school has the stronger finance path overall.

The biggest practical tradeoff is targeted finance recruiting strength versus scale. Boston College tends to offer a more concentrated path into finance, especially for East Coast roles in investment banking, asset management, and corporate finance, while Penn State gives you a much larger alumni network and a broader set of recruiting channels across industries and regions. If your question is strictly about finance placement and recruiting power, Boston College usually has the edge.

Boston College’s Carroll School of Management has a strong reputation with employers, and BC benefits a lot from its Boston location plus deep alumni ties in New York and Boston finance. That matters because many finance internships and full-time roles are still relationship-driven, and BC is one of those schools where alumni often show up consistently in recruiting pipelines.

Penn State is absolutely capable of getting students into strong finance outcomes, especially through the Smeal College of Business and its enormous alumni base. The main difference is that recruiting can feel a little less tightly concentrated into top finance channels, so students often need to be more proactive about clubs, networking, and off-campus outreach.

Another practical factor is peer competition inside the finance track. At BC, you are in a smaller, business-focused environment where finance recruiting is a very established lane. At Penn State, there are many opportunities, but because the university is so large, standing out can depend more heavily on how quickly you plug into the right organizations and recruiting prep.

So on the narrow question you asked, Boston College is the better pick for finance career placement and recruiting, particularly if you mean traditional high-paying finance jobs and East Coast employer access.
