USC or UCLA for pre-med research: which is better for undergrads?

For an undergraduate who wants to get into research early, USC often feels more accessible, while UCLA offers a larger research ecosystem that can be incredible once you break in. UCLA has a major academic medical center and enormous breadth in labs, hospitals, and biomedical fields, but students sometimes have to be more persistent to stand out and secure spots quickly.

USC fits the student who values close mentorship and wants a smoother path to building relationships with professors from the start. For pre-med research, that matters because early faculty connection can lead to lab roles, recommendation letters, and sustained projects rather than short-term volunteering.

UCLA fits the student who is comfortable navigating a bigger, busier environment and is willing to be proactive. The upside is scale: there are extensive opportunities tied to UCLA Health, biomedical science departments, neuroscience, public health, and affiliated institutes. If you are the kind of student who will send many emails, attend departmental events, and keep pursuing openings even after a few rejections, UCLA can offer exceptional depth and variety.

For pre-med specifically, I’d lean USC if your top priority is undergraduate access and mentorship in research rather than just the total number of labs on campus. I’d lean UCLA if you want the reach of a huge research university and are confident you can navigate a more competitive system. Both can prepare you very well for medical school, but they reward slightly different styles of student initiative.
