James Madison vs Florida State for communication: which is better for a communications major?

I’m trying to decide between James Madison and Florida State for communication. I like both schools overall, but I want to choose the one that would give me the stronger experience in comms and better preparation for internships or jobs after college.

I’m hoping to study something in the communications field, so I’m mostly comparing the programs themselves and the opportunities around them.

The biggest practical tradeoff is scale and location: Florida State gives you a larger, more specialized communications environment with access to a state-capital media and political scene, while James Madison offers a more intimate campus feel and a strong reputation for hands-on undergraduate teaching. For communications specifically, FSU has the edge in breadth, with multiple related paths through communication, media, advertising, public relations, and professional school resources. JMU can feel more personal and undergraduate-focused, which some students prefer if they want closer faculty access and a tighter campus community.

At Florida State, one of the strongest advantages is the surrounding internship ecosystem. Tallahassee is not New York or DC, but being in the capital creates real opportunities tied to government communication, public affairs, advocacy, political messaging, news, and media relations.

James Madison is appealing if you want a campus where undergraduates are very central to the academic experience. JMU tends to be known for engaged teaching, collaborative student life, and solid career support. For a communications student, that can translate into easier access to professors, leadership in student organizations, and less competition for certain opportunities. The tradeoff is that the surrounding market in Harrisonburg is smaller, so some internships may require more initiative, summer relocation, or tapping into networks beyond the immediate area.

If the question is which school is better for communications preparation in the broadest sense, I would lean Florida State. The larger professional ecosystem, stronger range of communication-adjacent options, and better built-in access to internships make it the more advantageous choice for many comms students. I would pick JMU only if you know you learn best in a somewhat smaller-feeling, more undergraduate-centered setting and value that day-to-day experience enough to outweigh FSU’s wider external opportunities.
