James Madison tends to feel more socially immersive day to day, while NC State usually has a broader, more spread-out social scene. At JMU, a lot of students describe campus life as very centered on the university itself, with strong school spirit, busy weekends, and a student body that is often highly engaged in campus events. NC State is social too, but because it sits in Raleigh, student life is less contained and often mixes campus activities with off-campus city life.

JMU has a more residential, self-contained environment in Harrisonburg, so it can be easier to keep running into the same people, build friend groups quickly, and feel like the campus is the main social hub.
