For software engineering jobs, both UIUC and the University of Washington are excellent, but they tend to serve slightly different kinds of students. UW, though, has a major advantage in direct access to Seattle-area recruiting, especially with companies like Amazon and Microsoft hiring heavily nearby.

If you want a school whose CS brand travels extremely well across the country and whose recruiting strength is broad rather than tied to one region, UIUC often has the edge in reputation. Employers in software know UIUC very well, and the school has a long track record of placing graduates into top engineering roles at big tech firms, startups, and quantitative or systems-heavy environments. For a student who wants flexibility to recruit in California, New York, Seattle, Chicago, or elsewhere without needing to explain the school’s standing, UIUC is a very safe bet.

UW makes the most sense for someone who wants to be plugged into the Seattle tech ecosystem while in school. The location matters: internships, part-time opportunities, industry events, and alumni connections are especially strong there, and that can translate into smoother access to software engineering recruiting in the Pacific Northwest. If your goal is to build a career around major Seattle employers or West Coast tech more broadly, UW gives you a practical geographic advantage that is hard to ignore.

One important caveat is that at UW, access to the computer science major itself can be a significant factor depending on how you were admitted and what program you are actually entering. UIUC is also highly competitive, but for career planning, being securely in the program you want matters more than small differences in prestige. If you already have a clear path into CS or software-related study at both schools, then the real distinction is this: UIUC is often seen as the slightly stronger national CS brand, while UW is especially powerful for students who want to capitalize on Seattle proximity and local recruiting density.
