UChicago sits in Hyde Park on Chicago’s South Side, so you have nearby restaurants, museums, lakefront access, and public transit into the rest of the city. Notre Dame is in Notre Dame, Indiana, next to South Bend, where the campus itself is the center of student life and the surrounding area feels quieter and more spread out.

At UChicago, the city feels present even when you stay close to campus. Hyde Park is more residential and calmer than downtown Chicago, but it still has a distinctly urban feel, with coffee shops, bookstores, local food spots, and the Museum of Science and Industry nearby. The Metra and CTA make it realistic to get downtown for internships, concerts, neighborhoods, and bigger city outings, though students still spend a lot of time in Hyde Park itself.

Notre Dame feels much more like a classic college campus bubble. The campus is large, beautiful, and very cohesive, and many students spend most of their time on campus or in nearby student-oriented spots around South Bend and Mishawaka. South Bend has restaurants, minor league sports, and basic city amenities, but it does not offer the same scale, density, or everyday off-campus options that Chicago does.
