Wake Forest vs Tufts for biology: which is better for undergraduate biology majors?

The biggest practical tradeoff is a smaller, more traditional campus environment with very accessible undergraduate support at Wake Forest versus a more research-dense, medically connected setting at Tufts. For biology specifically, Tufts benefits from its location near major hospitals, biotech, and research institutions in the Boston area, while Wake Forest stands out for close faculty interaction and easier-feeling access to professors and campus opportunities. Both can prepare you well for grad school, research, or pre-med, but the day-to-day experience around biology will feel different.

At Wake Forest, undergraduate teaching and mentoring are a real strength. Biology students tend to benefit from smaller classes earlier on, strong faculty availability, and a campus culture where undergrads are a central focus. If you want a place where it may be easier to build relationships with professors, get individualized guidance, and avoid feeling lost in a highly research-saturated environment, Wake has a real advantage.

At Tufts, the biology experience is likely to feel broader and more plugged into external science opportunities. The school’s connections to Tufts Medical Center and the wider Boston scientific ecosystem can matter a lot, especially if you want exposure to biomedical research, hospitals, public health, or internships during the academic year.
