Colgate or Villanova for business careers: which is better for recruiting and alumni network?

I’m a high school senior trying to narrow down where I’d have the best shot at building a business career after college. Both schools seem strong in different ways, but I keep hearing that recruiting and alumni connections matter a lot in business.

I’m trying to understand which one is generally the stronger choice for business careers.

Villanova has the clearer edge for business careers, especially if you care most about structured recruiting and a deep alumni presence in finance, consulting, accounting, and corporate roles. The Villanova School of Business is a well-known undergraduate business program, which matters because employers recruit there specifically for business talent. It also benefits from proximity to Philadelphia and easy access to New York, which helps with internships during the school year and frequent employer engagement.

One big differentiator is the academic setup. At Villanova, you are entering an established undergraduate business school with majors like finance, accounting, marketing, and management built for direct career preparation. Colgate is excellent academically, but it is a liberal arts college without a dedicated undergraduate business school, so students aiming at business usually piece that path together through economics, math, and related fields rather than through a business-specific curriculum.

Another difference is employer recruiting infrastructure. Villanova tends to have more on-campus and targeted recruiting for traditional business tracks, particularly accounting and finance, because companies know exactly where to find students interested in those fields. Colgate students absolutely land strong jobs, including on Wall Street and in consulting, but outcomes often depend more on individual networking and the broader alumni community than on a business-school pipeline.

The alumni network also tilts toward Villanova for business. Its business alumni base is large, active, and concentrated in industries where undergraduates often want early-career access. Colgate’s alumni network is famously loyal and can be very powerful, especially in certain East Coast circles, but for a student specifically prioritizing business recruiting at scale, Villanova’s network is more directly aligned with that goal.

Colgate becomes more compelling if you want a classic liberal arts experience and are comfortable pursuing business through economics and networking rather than through a formal business program.
