Is Duke or MIT better for physics as an undergraduate?
I’m a high school junior trying to narrow down colleges, and I’m really interested in physics. Duke and MIT both seem strong, but I keep seeing different opinions about which one is better for someone who wants to study physics in undergrad.

For undergraduate physics, MIT usually offers the deeper and more physics-centered environment. Its physics department is one of the defining academic centers of the Institute, undergraduates have unusually broad access to advanced coursework and research, and the campus culture is heavily oriented toward math, science, and technical problem-solving from day one.

Duke makes more sense for the student who wants strong physics within a broader university experience. Duke has serious research opportunities too, including access to faculty and labs, but the overall environment is less narrowly technical. If you want excellent physics while also valuing a more balanced mix of humanities, social sciences, school spirit, and a less all-STEM-all-the-time atmosphere, Duke can be a very appealing setting.
Duke may also suit someone who prefers a somewhat more flexible or less uniformly intense academic culture. You can still build a very strong physics profile there, especially if you are proactive about research and upper-level coursework, but the feel is different from MIT’s concentrated science culture. Some students thrive more when they are not in a campus where nearly everyone is pushing at that same technical extreme.
So the answer depends less on which department is respected, because both are, and more on where you want to spend four years. For pure physics immersion, early research density, and a campus built around science, MIT has the clearer edge. For a student who wants excellent physics inside a more traditional, wide-ranging undergraduate experience, Duke can be the more appealing home.
