Duke vs Carnegie Mellon for biology: which is better for an undergrad interested in research and med school?

I’m trying to decide between Duke and Carnegie Mellon for biology as a high school senior who is interested in research and maybe med school. Both seem strong in different ways, and I’m having trouble figuring out which one would be the better fit for an undergraduate biology student.

CMU is outstanding in technical and interdisciplinary work, and that can be a real advantage if your interests lean toward data-heavy or engineering-adjacent biology. But it is not primarily known as a traditional pre-med campus in the same way Duke is, and the surrounding clinical ecosystem is less central to the undergraduate identity.

For research specifically, both schools can offer meaningful opportunities, but the flavor is different. At Duke, the breadth is broader in classic biology and biomedical science, and it is easier to find labs connected to medicine, human health, and translational research. At CMU, the opportunities are often especially compelling when biology intersects with computation, robotics, engineering, or cognitive science.

If you are still undecided about med school and want the most flexible, well-supported path in mainstream biology, Duke is likely to feel more natural. If you already know you want biology through a quantitative or tech-driven lens, Carnegie Mellon can be an excellent home, but for the typical undergrad biology plus pre-med question, Duke has the stronger overall setup.
