Is the University of Washington or the University of Virginia more prestigious overall?

I’m trying to compare these two schools for college and keep seeing people rank them differently depending on the source. I know both are strong public universities, but I’m not sure which one is generally seen as more prestigious overall.

I’m mainly asking about reputation in a broad sense, not one specific major.

In broad national reputation, the University of Virginia is more often seen as the more prestigious school overall. It also has a long-established reputation as one of the most prominent public universities in the country in a broad, across-the-board sense.

That said, University of Washington is absolutely a top-tier public university too, and for some students its strengths can matter more than broad prestige. UW stands out especially in tech-connected fields, research, medicine, public health, and areas tied to Seattle’s economy. If someone is building toward engineering, computer science, biomedical research, or wants to be in a major innovation hub, UW can feel every bit as impressive, and sometimes more relevant.

UVA tends to fit the student who cares about a classic, nationally recognizable public-school brand with strong humanities, social sciences, business-related pathways, and a traditional residential college experience. Its reputation is especially durable on the East Coast and among employers or graduate programs that put weight on institutional legacy and broad academic standing. In casual prestige conversations, UVA is usually the name people elevate first.

UW makes more sense for the student who values research scale, access to major hospitals and labs, and proximity to a large tech ecosystem. Its academic reputation is very serious, but people sometimes talk about it more in terms of specific powerhouse departments than overall aura. So if the question is strictly overall prestige in the broadest sense, UVA has the edge, while UW is highly respected and can be the more compelling school in fields where it has exceptional depth.
