University of Washington vs NYU for business: which is better for an undergraduate business career path?

I’m trying to decide between the University of Washington and NYU for undergrad business, and I keep seeing different opinions about which one is stronger for careers after graduation.

I’m mostly interested in learning which school has the better overall reputation for business and better opportunities for internships and recruiting.

NYU is the stronger pick for an undergraduate business career path if cost is not a major concern. Stern has a more nationally recognized undergraduate business brand, it sits in New York City with direct access to finance, consulting, media, and startup internships during the school year, and its employer recruiting pipeline is especially deep for front-office business roles.

One big difference is reputation within business recruiting. NYU Stern is one of the undergraduate business schools that employers across the country immediately know, especially in investment banking, consulting, asset management, luxury, entertainment, and tech-adjacent business roles. The University of Washington’s Foster School is well respected, especially on the West Coast, but its name carries less automatic weight nationally in business circles than Stern’s.

Location also changes the kind of opportunities you can realistically access while enrolled. At NYU, students can intern part time during the semester because major firms are nearby, which matters a lot for building experience early. At UW, Seattle offers excellent access to tech, retail, operations, and corporate strategy internships, with strong connections to companies in that ecosystem, but it does not match New York’s density for finance and broad business recruiting.

The recruiting structure is another separator. Stern tends to draw a wider range of employers directly seeking undergraduates for highly competitive business roles, and alumni presence in those industries is especially visible. Foster can absolutely lead to strong outcomes, particularly for students aiming at Seattle-based companies or West Coast corporate roles, but NYU usually opens more doors across regions and industries right from undergrad.

Cost can still be the most important practical factor. If UW is dramatically cheaper, that can outweigh prestige, especially if you are interested in tech business, product-adjacent work, consulting, or corporate finance in the Pacific Northwest. But purely on overall business reputation and internship recruiting power, NYU has the edge.
