Is the University of Maryland or University of Wisconsin worth the cost for an out-of-state student?

For most out-of-state students, Wisconsin tends to be the easier school to justify at full price, especially if you want a classic large public university experience with a strong national reputation and a broad alumni network. Maryland is also an excellent university, but its biggest built-in advantage is often location, and that matters most if you plan to use the D.C. area heavily for internships, policy, government, or certain tech pathways.

Wisconsin stands out for the depth of the overall campus experience and the reach of its alumni base. Madison is one of the most established college towns in the country, the school has major-name recognition well beyond its region, and employers in many fields know it as a strong flagship. That can make the out-of-state premium feel more defensible because you are paying for a university with broad academic strength and a very cohesive student culture.

Maryland’s clearest differentiator is proximity to Washington, D.C. and the surrounding job market. For students interested in government, international relations, public policy, journalism, public health, or internships tied to federal agencies and nearby employers, that access can add real value during college, not just after graduation. College Park also has strong STEM and business options, so the location benefit is not limited to humanities or politics.

On academics alone, both are respected and neither is a bad investment if the price is manageable. The harder question is whether the extra cost leaves you with significant debt, because at that point the value calculation changes fast. If costs are close, Wisconsin usually has the stronger all-around case as an out-of-state option; if Maryland gives you a noticeably better path into D.C.-connected opportunities that you know you will use, its price can make sense too.
