UC San Diego vs Caltech for physics: which is better for an undergraduate interested in physics research?

I’m a high school senior trying to decide between UC San Diego and Caltech for physics. Both seem strong, but I’m mainly interested in doing serious undergraduate research and getting a solid physics education.

The curriculum is famously demanding, but that intensity can be a real advantage if you want deep preparation for graduate study in physics. UC San Diego can absolutely get you there too, but Caltech is more likely to surround you with a consistently physics-focused peer group and a department where undergraduates are a central part of the academic identity.

Between the two, I would lean Caltech for an undergraduate whose main goal is physics research and a deeply focused physics education. UC San Diego is an excellent choice and may be more appealing if you want a broader university experience or more flexibility, but for this specific academic goal, Caltech stands out more clearly.
