Which school is better for finance careers: NYU or Boston University?

The biggest practical tradeoff is direct access versus value of network strength: NYU puts you much closer to the center of finance recruiting in Manhattan, while Boston University can still place students well but usually with a little less built-in pull for top finance pipelines. For internships during the semester alone, NYU has a real edge because students can be in New York offices while taking classes. That matters in finance, where early experience, alumni access, and repeated networking often shape who gets interviews.

For finance specifically, NYU is usually the more powerful platform. Stern has one of the clearest reputations on Wall Street, and even outside Stern, NYU benefits from being deeply tied to New York finance employers.

Boston University is absolutely a credible option, especially through Questrom, and Boston has strong finance opportunities of its own. You can build a solid path into investment banking, asset management, corporate finance, and consulting from BU. But the finance ecosystem around BU is not as concentrated or as central to Wall Street recruiting as NYU’s, and that difference tends to show up most clearly for students targeting the most competitive front-office roles.

One important nuance is whether your NYU option is Stern or another NYU school. If it is Stern, the advantage for finance is pretty significant. If it is NYU outside Stern versus BU Questrom, NYU still has the location and network edge, but the gap becomes smaller and more dependent on your initiative, internships, and recruiting prep.

If your main goal is maximizing odds in finance recruiting right out of college, I’d lean NYU, especially Stern. BU is a good route, but NYU is the school more likely to open doors faster and more often in finance.
