Is Georgia Tech or Carnegie Mellon better for software engineering?
I’m trying to figure out which school would be the better fit if I want to study software engineering and eventually work in tech. Both Georgia Tech and Carnegie Mellon seem strong, but I keep seeing different opinions about which one is better for internships, job opportunities, and overall program strength.

Georgia Tech gives you a larger public-school ecosystem, while Carnegie Mellon offers a more concentrated computer science culture, a smaller academic environment, and one of the deepest reputations in software-related fields. For software engineering specifically, both can get you to top internships and jobs, but they feel different day to day.
Carnegie Mellon tends to stand out more on pure program depth and brand strength in computer science. The size of the program can mean more course options, more student organizations, and a broader campus experience, though it can also mean larger classes and more bureaucracy.
For internships and job opportunities, recruiters know both schools very well. CMU may carry a bit more instant prestige in software circles, but Georgia Tech’s alumni network and employer relationships are excellent, especially for students who are proactive.
One thing that matters more than people admit is academic culture. CMU can be more intense and compressed, with a stronger everyone-is-very-technical atmosphere. Georgia Tech is also challenging, but it often feels a little less narrow socially and academically because of its size and public-school structure.
If software engineering is the only metric and cost is similar, I’d lean Carnegie Mellon because of the concentration of CS talent, the reputation of the program, and the unusually strong technical environment. If Georgia Tech is notably cheaper, or you want a bigger and somewhat more flexible college experience without giving up elite tech outcomes, that is a very compelling reason to choose Tech instead.
