For a student whose main goal is building the strongest vet school foundation, Davis offers more depth and more ways to explore the field before applying.

Another advantage is the breadth of animal-related academics and research. Davis has especially strong animal science, biology, and agricultural programs, plus opportunities involving livestock, companion animals, wildlife, and lab research. If you want flexibility to try different corners of veterinary medicine before deciding what fits, Davis usually gives you more options under one roof.

Cal Poly Pomona is still a very credible pre-vet choice, especially because of its hands-on, learn-by-doing approach and strong agriculture and animal health connections. Some students thrive there because classes can feel more practical and career-oriented from the start. But for the specific goal of maximizing exposure to vet-school-oriented infrastructure, UC Davis is tougher to beat.

The one real caveat is cost and personal fit. If Cal Poly Pomona would be much more affordable or would let you earn stronger grades with less stress, that matters, because GPA, animal experience, and strong recommendations are all crucial for vet school.
