UC Berkeley or Columbia for internships: which school has stronger internship access and recruiting opportunities?

For internship access alone, Columbia usually has the edge during the school year because being in New York makes it much easier to do part-time internships, attend employer events, and build connections while classes are in session. Berkeley is also excellent, especially for tech and startups, but its strongest advantage is often summer recruiting and proximity to the Bay Area ecosystem rather than the same level of in-semester access. Both schools open doors, but they do so in different ways, and the better option depends a lot on the field you have in mind.

Columbia is especially appealing for students targeting finance, consulting, media, publishing, policy, nonprofits, and some areas of biotech and healthcare business. Manhattan gives students unusually direct access to employers, alumni, and semester-time internships, which matters a lot in industries where networking and repeated face time help. A student who wants to intern during the academic year without long travel time will usually find Columbia’s setup more convenient and more woven into daily student life.

Berkeley stands out for students interested in software, engineering, product, data science, entrepreneurship, and venture-backed startups. Its location near Silicon Valley and the broader Bay Area creates strong pipelines into major tech firms, research labs, and startup environments. Berkeley students also benefit from a huge alumni network in tech, and the culture around building projects, joining research, and pursuing startup internships is very real.

For highly competitive fields, the question is less about whether recruiters know the school and more about what kind of access you want week to week. Columbia often makes spontaneous networking, coffee chats, and in-semester work much easier. Berkeley can be incredibly powerful if you are proactive and aiming at West Coast tech, but it may require more intentional planning around commuting, timing, or summer opportunities.
