NYU vs Tufts: which campus is better for city life?

NYU feels much more urban day to day. Its buildings are woven directly into Manhattan around Greenwich Village, so the city is essentially your campus, and daily life means walking city streets, using the subway, and having restaurants, shops, internships, and entertainment immediately around you. Tufts, by contrast, has a more defined residential campus in Medford and Somerville, with Boston accessible but not constantly surrounding you in the same way.

You do not really “leave campus” to get into the city because campus and city blend together. That creates a very independent, fast-moving feel, but it also means less of a traditional enclosed campus atmosphere.

Tufts fits someone who wants city access without living in the middle of it every minute. The campus itself feels more contained and recognizably collegiate, with quads, residence halls, and a stronger sense that students are sharing one physical place. You can get into Boston reasonably easily, and Somerville itself has plenty going on, but your day-to-day experience is still more campus-based unless you make a point of heading out.

If your priority is lots of off-campus options within a few minutes on foot, NYU is the clearer match. If you want an actual campus experience first and a nearby city second, Tufts often feels more balanced.

The biggest practical difference is that NYU’s urban life is immediate and immersive, while Tufts gives you a campus home base with access to urban life nearby. Based on what you described, NYU sounds more aligned if you want to feel like the city is part of your everyday routine, while Tufts makes more sense if you want the college itself to feel more distinct from the city.
