Is Rice or Stanford harder to get into overall?

I’m a high school junior trying to get a realistic sense of how selective different colleges are, and these two come up a lot in conversations about super competitive schools.

I know both are very hard to get into, but I’m asking which one is generally considered harder overall in terms of admissions selectivity.

Stanford is generally considered harder to get into overall. Both schools are extremely selective, but Stanford is usually viewed as being in the very top tier of admissions difficulty nationwide, with a broader global applicant pool and especially intense competition across almost every academic and extracurricular profile. Rice is also highly selective, but it is not typically placed at quite the same admissions level as Stanford.

For a student comparing these two in practical terms, Stanford tends to attract an enormous number of applicants who are not just academically strong but also nationally or internationally distinguished in research, entrepreneurship, arts, athletics, or leadership. Its name recognition, Silicon Valley location, and cross-disciplinary appeal make it a destination for applicants from nearly every interest area, which raises the bar across the board.

Rice is still a reach for almost everyone, especially because it values strong academics, clear intellectual engagement, and fit with its residential college culture. It often appeals to students who want a smaller, more undergraduate-focused environment and who are drawn to Houston, collaborative academics, and the campus community. That can make Rice feel a bit more self-selecting than Stanford, which receives intense interest from a wider range of applicants.

So if the question is strictly which one is harder to get into overall, the answer is Stanford. Rice remains one of the most selective universities in the country, but Stanford is more commonly seen as the tougher admit.
