Is William & Mary or the University of Michigan more prestigious?

The biggest practical tradeoff is broad national name recognition versus a smaller, more old-established academic reputation. The University of Michigan is usually the more widely recognized name across the country and internationally, especially because of its size, research presence, graduate programs, athletics, and large alumni network.
