Lehigh or University of Maryland for pre-med?

Lehigh has the edge for pre-med if you want closer advising, smaller classes, and a campus where it may be easier to build strong faculty relationships early. Its undergraduate focus means pre-med students often get more direct access to professors, research mentors, and recommendation writers. That matters a lot for medical school applications, where sustained mentorship and strong committee support can make a real difference.

Lehigh’s smaller scale is probably its biggest advantage here. Intro science courses can still be challenging, but the overall environment is less sprawling than Maryland’s, so getting known by faculty and advisors tends to be more manageable. For a pre-med student, that can help with everything from finding lab work to getting personalized guidance on course sequencing, shadowing, and timing the MCAT.

Maryland stands out more for breadth. As a major public research university near Washington, D.C., it offers a wider range of labs, student organizations, clinical settings, and nearby health-related opportunities. If you are highly proactive and comfortable navigating a large system, that scale can be a real asset, especially for research, public health exposure, and building a varied resume.

The tradeoff is that Maryland can feel less personal. In a bigger pre-med population, you may need to push harder to stand out, secure mentoring, and avoid getting lost in large introductory courses. For pre-med, I tend to favor the place where it is easier to protect your GPA and form strong academic relationships, which points more toward Lehigh.
