Is Northeastern or Brandeis more fun for undergraduates?

The biggest practical tradeoff is city energy versus a smaller, more contained campus culture. Northeastern usually feels more active day to day because it sits right in Boston, and students are constantly moving between campus, co-ops, clubs, restaurants, concerts, and city events. Brandeis is more residential and close-knit, so the social scene tends to come more from the students you know on campus rather than from the surrounding area.

If by “fun” you mean there is always something happening and you want easy access to off-campus plans, Northeastern tends to have the edge. Its location gives students much more built-in access to the city, and that changes the rhythm of student life a lot. Even casual weekends can involve museums, games, food spots, or visiting other neighborhoods without much planning.

Brandeis can still be fun, but it is a different kind of fun. It is in Waltham rather than central Boston, and the campus culture is more intimate, quirky, and intellectual. Students often describe it as more tight-knit and community-based, which can be great if you like seeing familiar people and want a less sprawling social environment.

One thing to keep in mind is that Northeastern’s co-op culture can make the student body feel a little less synchronized, since people are on different work and class schedules. Brandeis, because it is smaller and more traditionally campus-centered, can sometimes feel more cohesive socially even if it is less high-energy overall.

So in a broad day-to-day sense, Northeastern is more likely to feel “fun” to an undergrad who wants motion, variety, and city access. Brandeis is more likely to feel enjoyable for someone who wants a smaller social world where campus relationships drive the experience.
