Is UChicago or UT Austin better for computer science?

The biggest practical tradeoff is this: UT Austin offers a larger, more established, and more industry-connected undergraduate CS environment, while UChicago gives you a smaller, more theory-oriented setting with broader flexibility across math, economics, and other fields. For pure computer science strength at the undergraduate level, UT Austin is more often viewed as the stronger option.

UT Austin’s CS department is one of the university’s flagship programs, and being in Austin helps with access to startups, established tech companies, and year-round networking. The scale can be a real advantage here: more specialized electives, more student groups focused on software, systems, AI, and data, and a bigger alumni presence in tech. If your main question is which school is more directly built around sending undergrads into software engineering and related jobs, UT Austin has the clearer edge.

UChicago is absolutely respected, but its strengths are somewhat different. It is known more for intense academics, strong theoretical training, and cross-disciplinary work than for being a classic pre-professional CS powerhouse. That can be excellent preparation for research, grad school, quantitative fields, or CS combined with economics, statistics, or math. But in day-to-day undergraduate CS culture, it is not usually the first school people point to over UT Austin.

For internships and jobs, both can get you there, but UT Austin tends to make that path more straightforward because of employer familiarity with the program and the volume of recruiting around it. UChicago can still open impressive doors, especially if you are highly proactive and interested in a more analytical or interdisciplinary path.

If you are choosing based mainly on the strength of the CS program and career preparation in tech, I would pick UT Austin over UChicago.
