Is UIUC or UC Berkeley more prestigious for engineering?

I’m a high school junior trying to understand how these two schools are viewed specifically for engineering. I know both are strong, but I keep seeing different opinions about which one has the stronger reputation overall.

I’m mainly trying to figure out how employers and other engineering programs tend to compare UIUC and UC Berkeley in terms of prestige.

The biggest practical tradeoff is this: Berkeley tends to carry broader name recognition across the public and outside engineering circles, while UIUC has an exceptionally strong engineering reputation that is often just as respected, and in some areas nearly interchangeable, among engineers and technical employers. Both schools are viewed as top-tier for engineering, and both are well known by graduate programs in the field.

In prestige terms, UC Berkeley usually has a slight edge in overall brand name. Its reputation is especially strong because the university is widely known across disciplines, has a major research profile, and is often perceived as one of the flagship public universities in the country. If someone outside engineering hears “Berkeley,” they are more likely to immediately recognize it.

Within engineering itself, though, the gap is much smaller than people make it sound. UIUC is not some step below Berkeley in the eyes of serious engineering recruiters. In fields like computer engineering, electrical engineering, civil engineering, mechanical engineering, and especially areas tied to large-scale technical recruiting, UIUC is deeply respected and can absolutely stand shoulder to shoulder with Berkeley. Many employers care more about your internships, projects, technical interviews, and specialization than a prestige difference between these two.

For graduate engineering programs, both names carry real weight. Berkeley may get a bit more of a halo effect overall, but UIUC is very well known to faculty and admissions committees, especially in core engineering disciplines. A strong applicant from either school will be taken seriously.

So if the question is pure overall prestige, Berkeley probably comes out a little ahead. If the question is engineering reputation specifically, the answer is much closer, and in some engineering circles UIUC is viewed as every bit as elite.
