Which is more selective, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign or University of Wisconsin–Madison?

I’m trying to compare these two schools as part of my college list and want to understand how selective each one is in general.

I know both are popular public universities, but I’m not sure which one is typically harder to get into.

In general, UIUC is often a bit harder to get into overall, especially because some of its most sought-after programs are very selective. That said, Wisconsin–Madison is also a highly competitive public university, and for many applicants the difference is not dramatic at the university-wide level.

UIUC tends to feel tougher for students applying to fields like computer science, engineering, business, or other capped majors. At Illinois, your intended major matters a great deal, and admission to the university does not necessarily mean easy access to the most in-demand programs later. A student aiming at a specialized, high-demand area may experience UIUC as clearly more selective than Wisconsin.

Wisconsin–Madison is still very competitive, but it is often a little less sharply major-dependent in the admissions process. For a student applying more broadly in the arts and sciences or exploring interests, Wisconsin may not feel quite as narrow or high-stakes by major at the point of admission. It attracts many strong applicants, especially from out of state, so it should still be treated as a reach or high target depending on the rest of your profile.

If you are comparing them for your list, the cleanest takeaway is this: UIUC is usually the tougher admit in the most popular academic areas, while Wisconsin–Madison is very selective but often a bit less extreme in how much the intended major drives difficulty. For an undecided student, the two may look fairly close. For a student targeting a top-demand program, UIUC is more likely to be the harder admit.
