How hard is it to get into the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign compared with Indiana University?

I’m a junior trying to build a realistic college list and these two schools keep coming up for me. Both seem like solid options, but I’m not sure how they compare in terms of admissions difficulty overall.

I’m mainly trying to understand which one is generally more selective for applicants like me.

UIUC is typically harder to get into than Indiana University overall, especially if you are applying to one of UIUC’s most sought-after programs. UIUC is well known for being more selective in areas like engineering, computer science, and business, and admission there can vary a lot by major. Indiana is still a respected and popular school, but for many applicants it is the more accessible option.

One big difference is how much program choice affects your odds. At UIUC, the college or major you apply to matters a great deal, and some departments are significantly tougher than the university as a whole. That means a student who looks competitive for UIUC overall might still face a steep climb for certain majors. Indiana admissions are less sharply defined by extreme major-level selectivity in the same way, so the process often feels more predictable.

Another differentiator is the applicant pool each school attracts. UIUC draws a very large number of applicants from Illinois, across the U.S., and internationally, with especially intense interest in STEM fields. That creates more competition at the top end. Indiana has broad appeal too, but it is not usually discussed as being as difficult to enter across the board.

For building a realistic list, it makes sense to treat UIUC as the tougher admit in most cases. If your intended major is something especially competitive at UIUC, the gap can be even bigger than it first appears.
