UIUC feels bigger and more spread out in everyday life, while the University of Maryland usually comes across as somewhat more compact and more tied into a dense suburban corridor. At Illinois, the twin-city setup of Urbana and Champaign, the long stretches between some academic buildings, and the large engineering and agricultural footprint make the campus feel expansive. At Maryland, College Park has a large campus too, but the core student areas often feel more centralized, and the proximity to Washington, DC adds energy beyond the campus itself.

At UIUC, getting around often feels like navigating a true Big Ten flagship built on a broad grid. The Main Quad is classic and lively, but once you move toward engineering, research spaces, residence halls, or the south end of campus, distances become more noticeable.
