Which is better for beach access: University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign or UC San Diego?

I’m trying to compare these two schools based on how easy it would be to get to the beach. I know one is inland and one is coastal, but I want to understand the actual difference in day-to-day access for a student.

For someone who cares a lot about being able to go to the beach regularly, which school is better?

The biggest practical tradeoff is that UC San Diego makes the beach part of normal student life, while at UIUC a beach trip is more of an occasional outing that takes planning. UC San Diego sits right by the coast in La Jolla, and students can get to beaches like Black’s Beach or La Jolla Shores very quickly by walking, biking, or a short bus ride. UIUC is in inland central Illinois, so there is no ocean beach nearby and regular beach access is not really built into campus life.

At UC San Diego, going to the beach can be something you do between classes, on a weekend morning, or for a sunset without turning it into a full travel day. The weather also supports that kind of routine much more often. That matters if by “regularly” you mean a few times a month or even weekly.

At UIUC, you would be looking at lakes rather than the ocean, and not in the same immediate, everyday way. There are some local parks and lake areas in the broader region, but they are not a substitute for living near the coast. If beach access is one of your priorities for quality of life, UIUC will feel very limited on that front.

So for actual day-to-day beach access, UC San Diego is the clear choice by a wide margin. UIUC can absolutely offer plenty of other strengths, but for someone who really wants the beach to be a regular part of college life, these two schools are not especially close.
