Even people who do not follow higher education closely tend to recognize it as a top private university, whereas UIUC is more often seen as an excellent flagship public university rather than a universally elite-brand school.

Another difference is how each school’s reputation travels across industries. Duke tends to have stronger all-purpose prestige in fields like consulting, finance, law, medicine, and academia, partly because its reputation is less tied to any single set of departments. UIUC is absolutely respected by employers, but its strongest reputation is often more concentrated in engineering, computer science, and certain research-heavy areas.
