Santa Clara University or Northeastern University for business: which is the better choice?

I’m a high school senior trying to narrow down my college list, and I’m deciding between Santa Clara and Northeastern for business. I want to study something like finance, marketing, or entrepreneurship, and both schools seem strong in different ways.

I’m mostly trying to figure out which one is generally considered the better overall option for a business major.

For business, Northeastern is usually seen as the stronger overall option if you want national reach, built-in work experience through co-op, and a bigger university network. Santa Clara is especially compelling for students who want a more traditional campus experience and direct proximity to Silicon Valley, particularly if they are interested in entrepreneurship, tech-adjacent business, or West Coast recruiting. Both can work well for finance, marketing, or entrepreneurship, but they serve somewhat different students.

Northeastern tends to fit the student who wants career preparation woven into the degree from the start. Its co-op system is the biggest differentiator here, because business students can graduate with substantial full-time work experience, which matters a lot in fields like marketing, finance, consulting, and product-related roles.

Santa Clara makes the most sense for someone who values a smaller, more personal undergraduate environment and wants access to Silicon Valley companies without being in a giant city. The Leavey School of Business has a solid reputation, and the school’s location creates strong opportunities in startups, venture-oriented spaces, and tech companies looking for business interns. For entrepreneurship especially, Santa Clara can feel very connected to the local ecosystem in a practical, day-to-day way.

For entrepreneurship or tech-focused business paths, Santa Clara becomes much more attractive because of where it sits and the kinds of companies nearby. For marketing, either can work well, but Northeastern has an edge if you want multiple rounds of structured experience before graduating.

So the better overall option is probably Northeastern for most business students, mainly because of co-op and broader reach. Santa Clara is the one I’d look harder at if you know you want a smaller school and see yourself building a career in the Silicon Valley orbit.
